Accounting/Financial
Accountants
Accounts Payable
Auditors
Book Keepers
Credit Controllers
Finance
Payroll
Taxation


David Smith, Economics Editor at The Sunday Times says in the below article:

“The permanent workforce shrinkage that we’ve suffered in the UK seems to be unique. It’s not quite clear why that is, and it’s obviously causing a lot of concern and debate at the top of government."

Suggested reasons why accountancy as a specialism is having such a hard time include:

  • Brexit
  • The over 50's leaving employment. Whilst ill health is a factor, their leaving the workforce is mainly voluntary, having 'tested' retirement during the pandemic
  • That the profession is considered 'dull'

  • The commitment of time, energy and money to qualifications is a barrier

  • It's not that well paid

  • The profession has been slow to modernise

  • Auditors, in particular, work long hours and have to travel - this is no longer providing satisfaction
