KPMG & REC Report on Jobs May 2023

It's hard not to feel quite discouraged when reading these surveys because every month it's doom and gloom.

There is no doubt that hiring remains incredibly challenging, with the shortage of available skilled people continuing.

Personally, I don't see this changing for the foreseeable future so if businesses are holding out, they're going to be disappointed.

There have been lots of reasons for people to move jobs since the height of the pandemic and yet they haven't. Speaking for the accountancy sector, that is.

Older workers who left the workforce during the pandemic looked like coming back because of the cost of living crisis but businesses maintained barriers for mature applicants and in a matter of months the cost of living crisis will likely have eased significantly

Then the desire to get back to work might not be there. Especially once the summer months arrive, bringing good weather and the desire for freedom from the 9 to 5.

Indeed if you're a business struggling to hire, and you haven't considered training and upskilling your existing staff, now is the time.

Do it right now and solve your medium to long-term hiring problems.

Because no one is going to solve them for you.

I'm always happy to be a source of help and advice, for free, whether it be around reviewing hiring processes or putting together a compelling offering to job seekers.
