"Vacancy growth hits record high"

This is great news and it's keeping recruiters busy up and down the country. Plus, because businesses are struggling to hire for themselves this is boom time for recruitment agencies.

Or is it?

Because whilst job vacancies are plentiful, the number of suitable jobseekers remains hugely problematic. In fact, the availability of workers is at a 24 year low.

Nobody really knows when this will ease but many of us have been predicting the autumn. When the JRS scheme ends, when businesses that hoped to recover over the summer months fail to do so and when the WFH 5 days-a-week bubble bursts.

If you're in business and don't want to have your recovery impeded it's high time you reviewed what you're offering your employees to keep them. And how you're going to be highly competitive to the applicant market when you're hiring.

Then, when you decide to hire, think about how you're going to find the best applicants. Because writing a job advert that says how wonderful you are and then a list of job duties isn't going to cut it in today's market. Potential applicants are asking 'what's in it for me?' And if you can't answer that in the first paragraph, they''ll scroll on by.

With the vaccine programme such a great success and the country opening up again, let's not spoil the economic recovery with sloppy hiring decisions.

My advice?

If you are not confident you can do it alone, bite the bullet and get a good recruiter on your side to support you.
