KPMG & REC Report on Jobs May 2024
The headlines this month are:
- Placements fall at a weaker pace
- Pay rates increased to attract candidates
- Candidate availability growth hits five-month high
Talking to other recruiters and suppliers to the recruitment industry it's been "dead" out there.
But, in the last couple of weeks, there has been a feeling that maybe we're just about to turn a corner—a murmur, a sixth sense, rather than any hard facts.
Businesses are having conversations about future hiring (you can't remain paralysed forever), inflation is under control and we have the hope of a summer interest rate cut.
Not to mention a general election sometime before the end of the year. Whether you like the probable outcome or not, it offers much-needed certainty to the business community.
(However, I know small businesses are fearful of Labour's plans to make unfair dismissal a Day One right!)
In the meantime, if you're hiring and you think that an increased number of job seekers is good news, you'd be wrong. There remain sectors and geographical areas with continued candidate availability issues and hirers need to be mindful of that.
Attracting quality applications to job adverts remains a highly skilled job which requires patience.
