KPMG & REC Report on Jobs April 2022

"With continued uncertainty, it's no surprise that candidate supply is in decline. We see this every time there is political or economic unrest.

"I also believe that this time it's worse because the workforce is tired, after an extended period of stress, uncertainty, balancing home and work and the difficulty getting a break to recharge batteries for two years.

"Job-seeking requires effort and commitment, something I think most people who might otherwise be considering a move, aren't capable of at this precise moment in time. And this will remain unchanged until the summer holiday period has passed.

"This might also explain the number of people ghosting employers through the recruitment process or accepting counteroffers rather than actually starting a new challenge.

"Whilst the survey shows an increase in job vacancies, this varies from sector to sector, as you'd expect. Accounting and financial are lumped into one sector so the numbers are not always an accurate reflection of our own sector specialism.

On the one hand, we're seeing the Big Four accountancy practices hiring huge numbers of people but across small firms, it's been slow. And accountancy hiring within industry has been steady, dipping in recent weeks.

"Accountancy personnel have been kept busy ensuring businesses have been compliant during the pandemic and people have stayed put. You'll see that accounting/financial people remain in very short supply.

"Of course, they exist. They're just not in the market for change.

"And if they are 'on the market', they are receiving multiple offers, driving starting salaries up. Or, if something went wrong in the recruitment process, they're accepting large counteroffers."
