KPMG & REC Report on Jobs November 2021

"The challenge for the past five years has remained the candidate shortage. And this is not going to end any time soon.

"Personally I am very sceptical that "The Great Resignation" is coming. Because at the moment it feels like a hoax.

"We are a nation of exhausted people, keen to have some stability in our lives. And with the never-ceasing news of an uncertain winter with Covid (working from home, classroom closures, full hospitals), the energy company crisis, rising costs and goods shortages, is it any wonder that people in jobs are staying put? We all need an anchor and that might be the only one many people have right now.

"I expect that the candidate shortage will continue until the spring of 2022, at least. We know it's complicated, with Brexit and the need to re-train but, put simply, if skilled people don't feel confident to move, they won't. And skills take time to train and develop, so this is not a short-term fix.

"As for the good news, that those that are moving are being rewarded with higher pay? Be careful. Big salaries = golden handcuffs and long-term misery.

"The mental health of the country should be a priority now so that we can survive the winter (or British media 'news' of woe).

"People will start to move jobs again when they are good and ready and not before.

"My advice to current job-seekers is to be realistic, not greedy. To hirers, be realistic and stop making ridiculous demands of applicants. With such a simple strategy we could get out of this problem fairly easily.

"But is anyone listening?"
