KPMG & REC Report on Jobs June 2021

No prizes for guessing that May saw an increase in permanent job vacancies and placements.

With lockdown restrictions easing, there's more business confidence and, whilst there remains a shortage of skilled people, they are not impossible to find. Just very challenging.

I expect this to remain the case until the autumn due to the imminent summer holidays and the continuing Job Retention Scheme which is propping up employment.

Personally, I think that whilst there will be a round of redundancies countrywide in September, mainly in the hospitality and travel sectors, employment will remain high, with new vacancies continuing to be created in other sectors that have recovered quicker.

I challenge you to take a UK holiday this summer and find a table at a restaurant without a booking. The hospitality sector is open, in the main, but not running at full capacity due to lack of staff. And this sector will certainly account for the high number of vacancies being listed. Problems in this sector, affect their suppliers also, of course.

But, we're certainly headed in the right direction.
