KPMG & REC Report on Jobs February 2021

Clare Wight says "The news that there was a drop in permanent staff recruitment won't come as a surprise to anyone. The January lockdown was a swipe sideways, even though we expected it to come.

The coming three months are going to be harder still, with cash in increasingly short supply for many businesses who are not in a position to bring people back from furlough, let alone hire new staff. Deferred VAT is coming due, as are repayments on the first loans drawn-down to help businesses last year. Then add rates ... It's about to get very bumpy.

On top of this, we have an increasing talent shortage, with those that might ordinarily be tempted to job search, staying put.

This is down to the risk involved with moving to the unknown and also financial woes. Employees are safer in their current jobs, with the ability to be placed on furlough, the likelihood of a redundancy payment if no longer needed and, for many, it's very much 'better the devil you know'. Life is stressful enough without a change in jobs.

There is an end to this and it's within sight. I expect there will more confidence as lockdowns ease, businesses re-open, confidence returns and the most vulnerable are vaccinated. Roll on May."
